Yoga practice during menstruation has always been a controversial issue. Some say it is ok to practise yoga during those difficult days whereas some believe it is dangerous to indulge in yoga during menstruation.

Listen to your Body

All women are different when it comes to menstruation. Some may feel the side effects such as pain, cramps, low energy, bloating, fatigue, mood swings, irritability etc. However, there are many who do not feel any problem during menstruation. Hence, before deciding on indulging in Yoga during menstruation, it is crucial to listen to your body.

Menstrual cycle is very delicate. For those who are stressed out and travel a lot or change diet frequently, the cycle can change. It is crucial to be aware of your cycle and to listen to your bodies. The state of our menstrual cycle actually reflects the state of our physical and mental health. Hence, it is not just asanas that affect the cycle but many other factors.

Practicing relaxation techniques such as yoga nidra can be extremely beneficial for women during menstruation. It helps clearing away various negativities and introduces acceptance and positivity of one’s self.

The Reasons to Avoid Yoga during Menstruation

The primary reason it is crucial to avoid practicing yoga is due to the related symptoms of menstruation. In case, a woman experiences extreme menstruation (flow of blood) then even the thought of practicing may result in negative emotions. Hence, the practice of Yoga under these circumstances should be limited to yoga nidra and other gentle pranayams including the following listed below:

• Bhramari or humming bee breath

• Anulom vilom or alternate nostril breathing

• Ujjayi or the victorious breath

• Deep breathing

Om Chanting can be quite beneficial for women during menstruation. It helps in relaxing body and mind. It also increases energy levels for those who face fatigue and low energy during this time.

To sum up, if you are not feeling too uncomfortable then practising yoga can be actually useful to help alleviate various symptoms such as abdominal cramps, mild pain, back pain etc. It can also help in balancing emotions such as mood swings, anger, anxiety, depression, irritability etc. Yoga during menstruation also helps with gentle opening of the pelvic region and relieves congestion.
